PNG (Portable Network Graphics), a universally recognized graphic file format developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), appeared for the first time in 1996. According to W3Tech statistics, around three-quarters of all websites are based on images in JPG format, which is due mainly to the efficiency associated with compression. Depending on the chosen compression level, this process is associated with a certain loss of quality since not all image information is retained. For example, a color conversion between the RGB color space, YCbCr color model, and a low-pass filter (where high frequencies are filtered out in order to reduce the file size). The more complex the image content, the less suitable vector formats are: a photo, for example, can be imitated with vectors, but the countless facets, light effects, and detailed shading really only come into full effect with pixel graphics. In the case of scaling, these shapes, which have an exact size and length specification, automatically adapt to the new overall dimensions. The reason for this is that vector images are not composed of individual pixels but of different shapes that are represented using vectors. This hindrance is simultaneously the greatest distinguishing feature of the vector-based graphics, which can be minimized or maximized in any way, maintaining the same quality.
If such files are enlarged or reduced, however, this will result in a loss of quality since the pixel dots will start to look more like small, square shapes. The smaller the pixel and the more numerous, the higher the resolution/quality of the image file - and the bigger the file size.
When it comes to the former, the overall image consists of many individual dots: the pixels. The traditionally used pixel art and raster graphics, as well as the less frequently used vector graphics, can be clearly distinguished from one another. There is a large number of image file formats for two-dimensional computer graphics and photographs, although the intended purposes differ for both.
